The ''Berserker''-class gunship is designed to serve as a gunship, capable of knocking out fighters, and forming an anti-fighter barrier around capital ships, allowing larger vessels to concentrate the majority of their weapons on heavier vessels. Additionally, because of their plasma cannons, they can conduct quick strikes against larger craft, though not as efficiently as a [[Harbinger-class Bomber|''Harbringer''-class bomber]]. Because of their relatively heavy armament for their size, they are often detailed to assist planetary units by serving as air support.

''Berserker''-class gunships are rarely deployed on their own, usually serving as escorts for larger battle groups built around carrier or cruisers, dependent on the mission.

Because of their abnormally large power cores, the ''Berserker''-class is capable of operating within an atmosphere for extended periods of time without an undue strain because of their mass. To further augment their size, they are equipped with the shields normally reserved for a frigate or light cruiser, allowing them to take a beating while supporting larger craft, as well as larger-than-normal magazines, due to the higher-than-normal rate of fire of their anti-fighter/anti-vehicle batteries.
