The term "Auxiliary Cruiser" refers to a civilian vessel similar in dimensions to a standard military cruiser, that has been or can be re-purposed into an irregular military vessel. While this page cannot go into exhaustive detail on every single class of civilian ship within [[The Initiative]], it will try to give details on the average classes.<br/><br/>Because of the constant threat of pirates, and other renegade forces throughout the galaxies, the Initiative has taken to having a standing force of auxiliary military vessels, rather than to follow the traditional practice of preparing them at the start of a war, to allow for a more rapid response, and allow officers and crew of such vessels to be better acquainted with their equipment.
==History==
Allowing civilian vessels to carry military-grade thrusters, arms, and armor was decided by the Initiative's senate, under the [[Civilian Auxiliary Military Forces Act|Civilian Auxiliary Military Forces Act (CAMFA)]] in the late 21st century in response to on-going fighting against pirates and other renegade factions. Prior to this, civilian vessels had been severely limited to solely defensive armaments, and almost non-existent armor.

CAMFA authorized civilian vessels to carry additional equipment, though still placed strict limitations, unless the vessel's owners agreed to place the vessel under military authority during times of emergency as an armed military vessel. Merchants violating their agreement would see their vessel seized and crewed by military personnel rather than their own, with the vessel being retained by the government following the engagement.
