''Praetorian''-class Battleships are the largest heavy combatant currently fielded. Intended for smashing through enemy forces, the ''Praetorian''-class battleship is relatively slow, moving at a maximum of .1 light (close to 30 thousand kilometers a second), having one of the slowest accelerations in the fleet because of the extra mass of it's armor.

==History==
The first ''Praetorian''-class battleships were launched in [[2341|2341 CE]]. For the past three centuries, there had been no new battleships after the [[Fall of Earth]]. The first ''Praetorian''-class battleships were intended to be used against retired warships captured or rearmed by various pirate gangs, or newly constructed pirate vessels. The first generation ''Praetorian''-class battleships utilized new technology such as artificial gravity that had not been available for prior generations.

Due, in part, to the resounding success of the first generation of the ''Praetorian''-class, the second generation wouldn't see planning and construction until the mid 2400s when production was accelerated to combat an increasing number of pirate factions. Following the prototype of the second generation being built in orbit over [[Sanctuary]], later models were ordered for construction at other shipyards.

===Namesake===
''Praetorian''-class Battleships are named after the Praetorian Guard of old Rome, on [[Earth]]. The Praetorian Guard was the personal guard of the Emperor, and effectively could control the Empire through him, as well as who became Emperor. They also, at times, killed the emperor (either for hire, or due to disagreements with him).
