| The Expedition was created by the order of the [[Protector of the Initiative]], at [[Central Control]], in order to investigate the strange events surrounding the destruction of the [[SFCV Heart of Winter|SFCV ''Heart of Winter'' (BB1-02)]], and other similar strange phenomena. The Expedition was initially comprised of survivors of the [[Heart of Winter Incident|''Heart of Winter'' Incident]], but later joined by specialists from all of human space to delve into the mysteries of the universe.

| A month after the events of the ''Heart of Winter'' Incident, the Expedition was formally established at the behest of the Protector, and acknowledged, albeit grudgingly, by the [[Senate of the Initiative|Senate]] at the [[House of Planets]]. The Expedition was given the [[SFCV Dinavar|SFCV ''Dinavar'' (D13)]] to utilize as their mobile base of operations, as well as coordinates to the last stop of the ''Heart of Winter'' prior to it's arrival at Sanctuary. Information recovered from the wreckage led the expedition to the planet of [[Taelbern]], in the [[Aditi System]], which had gone silent several days prior to the expedition being dispatched.
