Military Field Ration

From Beyond the Frontier

The Military Field Ration (MFR) is the standard field ration issued to military and government personnel not attached to a ship or base by The Initiative.

Design

The MFR consists of a meal in a light-weight double-layer air-tight can. The first layer contains an air-activated heating element, intended to bring the meal to an ideal eating temperature, while the inner layer contains the actual meal. The MFR comes in a variety of flavors with an effort to make them meet the nutritional and caloric needs of personnel in the field, to avoid vitamin or calorie deficiencies. Typically the military version comes with additional packets to increase the calorie count as needed over the base version.

History

While the Military Field Ration began its life for use solely by the military, it was adopted by Ministry of Welfare to be issued to families on public assistance, in order to minimize any possible chance of "wasteful spending", and ensure that each person had a nutritional meal. The civilian variant is referred to as a "Basic Nutritional Sustenance Pack" or "BNSP".

Surplus packs are often sold to civilian expeditions at cost to promote civilian jobs in groups that might field mining, survey, or scientific expeidtions.
