The Mark I Energy Rifle (MIER) is a directed energy weapon in development for The Initiative. Despite being a directed energy weapon, without any rifling, it is still referred to a a "rifle".

Design Details

The Mark I Energy Rifle (MIER) creates plasma in a chamber half-way down the weapon, which is then expelled at speed down the barrel of the rifle. The rifle is powered by a replaceable power pack, interchangeable with the ones powering the standard Mark I Battle Rifle and the Light Infantry Battle Rifle, though at a decreased efficiency.

Features

The Mark I Energy Rifle includes a standardized scope mounted atop it, as well as an under-slung flashlight and aiming assist laser. In addition to these, the MIER has a collapsible stock, a replaceable barrel.

Materials

The Mark I Energy Rifle is designed using synthetic polymers, with a specialized heat-resistant polymer lining the barrel. However, due to the extremely high temperatures, the barrel has to be replaced on a fairly regular basis or suffer severe performance degradation.

History

The development of the Mark I Energy Rifle began in 2473 CE, with a prototype released in 2479 CE. However, because of severe performance issues, the design was sent back to the design team, with the weapon still considered to be "in development" without having been issued to operational units as yet.
