The Model 7 Personal Defense Weapon (M7 PDW) is a civilian chemical-propellant firearm utilized primarily by corporate security forces within The Initiative. It is often referred to as the "Typhoon" because of it's high rate of fire relative to it's size.

Design Details

The M7 PDW is designed to be a light-weight weapon with a significant punch for it's weight and low caliber. The M7 PDW utilizes a electronic firing pin, rather than a mechanical one, to decrease moving parts and therefore possible points of failure, while allowing the easy integration of a firing computer to optimize a variety of factors to increase accuracy and decrease recoil. The firing computer can access the integral folding stock, to shorten or expand portions in order to help minimize the recoil and increase accuracy.

Because the barrel is designed in several irising portions, the firing computer is also capable of minutely altering barrel characteristics such as the rifling to further compensate for factors, by tightening the barrel as needed. Because of the weight of these integral machinations, the M7 PDW utilizes a great deal of plastics to reduce weight, and can only carry a 30-round magazine, compared to the greater capacity of other weapons.

Because of the M7's low caliber, but high reliability, it is often issued to security and support forces not expected to participate in combat because of it's relatively compact features, with the foregrip and stock folding out of the way when not in use, and adjusting to the operator's preferences, as well as having an ambidextrous casing ejection system. Furthermore, the M7 can be locked to recognize individuals based on their Neural Interface, if they have one, or their palmprint.

Variants

Model 7 Personal Defense Weapon Mark 2

The Model 7 Personal Defense Weapon Mark 2 (M7 PDW Mk 2) is designed as several of the features removed, such as the palm scanner, in order to decrease both weight and cost. This has made Mark 2's popular among less than legal elements, and with people expecting to need to carry the Mk 2 for extended periods of time.

History

The M7 PDW is derived from a pre-War of Secession effort to create a light-weight personal defense weapon for vehicle crews based on a variety of weapons popular on Earth. When the war ended, the chemical-propellant Model 1 Personal Defense Weapon was discarded by the military in favor of coilgun technology. It would later be picked up by a design firm, which continued development. The M7 itself was released in 2432 CE, with the Mark 2 following early the next year.
