The United Nations was formed in the aftermath of the Second World War on Earth, as part of an initiative to prevent further world wars and mass bloodshed, to replace their failed precursor, the League of Nations. However, their efforts to put an end to war or mass bloodshed, and serve as a forum for peaceful discussion would prove unsuccessful. However, with the rise of the Initiative, in an effort to deal with their multinational origins and support after public unveiling on Earth in the 2020s, several nations banded together under the United Nations Security Council, bolstering the UN Peacekeeping Force and establishing the United Nations Space Command to wage war.

However the United Nations were subject to infighting and disagreement between the permanent members of the UN Security Council. These members found themselves more often at odds and having to fend off not only espionage, but also sabotage, by other members hoping to gain an advantage after the conflict. Several member nations withdrew from the UN and the conflict at large, instead choosing to negotiate with the Initiative for more favorable terms, including access to the Initiative's more advanced spacecraft, in exchange for immunity from orbital bombardment and free reign to recruit colonists from these nations.
