Born on Aella, Alem was the eldest child of Aimon Maruki, a self-proclaimed 'Jack of all Trades, Master of None', as well as an alcoholic, lousy gambler and free-loader, and his wife, Chloe, who is a freighter pilot, running commodities out of Aella and bringing in supplies.

His early childhood was rough, his father was rarely present and took little interest in the kids, except to order them around and mete out discipline, very harshly at times. At a young age he took on the responsibility of trying to take care of his family and started taking jobs including farmhand, painting, doing whatever he could to help his mom out. When he was ten, his dad walked out on them, and Alem assumed the role of 'man of the house' as well as he could, although he was still a kid and mischievous, playing pranks. Some of those, against his siblings, or people he liked were just silly fun, but if he didn't like the victim, he could be creatively brutal.

He did all right in high school, although his time was divided between homework, odd jobs, play and dating. He was often badgered about his dad being a flake, but he would retaliate, mostly with off-the-wall pranks, but he wasn't against resorting to fighting if it came to that. He also stood up for his younger siblings more than once, and soon earned a reputation that he wasn't to be messed with.

In his junior year he took courses aimed toward piloting, as he shared his mother's passion for the skies and took a job on a freighter as a 'cargo specialist', able to contribute substantially to the family when fate intervened. On his 20th birthday he was out 'celebrating' with some friends when they decided to take a shuttle for a joy ride. The mistake ended in a collision that destroyed a warehouse, but fortunately no casualties. An understanding judge offered the boys a choice -- prison or military. No fool, Alem joined the Ground Forces and was shipped to Sanctuary for training.

At first it was difficult for him to conform to the structure of military life, but he soon grew to like it, and settled in. He quickly advanced up to Staff Sargent but never advanced beyond that. While it couldn't really be proved, his superiors knew that he was responsible for many of the pranks that seemed to follow him, and he even admitted to a few when it looked like others were going to be blamed.

It was while 'celebrating' his 40th birthday (some people never learn) that he took up a dare and 'commandeered' a private freighter to make a humanitarian run to one of the core planets and it was only because he helped the colonists and didn't break anything that he was allowed to remain in the GF and just busted from Staff Sergeant to Private. He is gradually working his way back up in rank.

Personality Traits

For the most part, Alem has a devil-may-care attitude. He tires to see the humor in things, to see the bright side and find a way to laugh and put people at ease. He's got an infectious laugh and a playful glint in his eye that reflects an almost boyish exuberance, but that doesn't mean he won't take things seriously.

Caring and protective, he strives to help the underdog, do what he can to protect those who need it. He hates bullies, hates people who take advantage of those that are weaker than they are, and he does what he can to intervene. When that happens, he can be fierce, jumping in without reservation, almost to the point of being reckless.

Even so, he'd just as soon avoid a fight, and tries to think 'outside the box'. He's got an easy manner and prefers not to fight, although he's smart enough to realize that that isn't always possible.
